This week, while assisting a family with their move to Quebec, I realized just how different the tax system in Quebec can be from that of our country of origin:
“How do taxes work in Quebec? Do we pay more than we do back home?” And the answer wasn't so simple or straightforward for me to explain, even though I'd kept my tax returns up to date since arriving, and even after contacting agents from the Canada Revenue Agency and Revenu Québec several times.
I'll use my own country of origin, France, as an example.
In France: a household-based tax system
Incomes are added together and then taxed jointly. This can quickly increase the tax burden, especially for working couples.
In Quebec: an individual-based tax system
Each person is taxed separately.
In practical terms:
no "tax household"
no aggregation of income
tax is directly deducted at source
What this really changes :
Many people realize that their effective tax rate is often more balanced their disposable income is more transparent. They have fewer "surprises" at the end of the year.
The key point
It's not just about the tax rate; it's about the system. This system is progressive and calculated in brackets. Your entire salary isn't taxed at the same rate, depending on the income brackets you pass through. Each income bracket is taxed at a different rate (14% → UP TO $58,523; 20.5% → $58,523 TO $117,045; 26% → $117,045 TO $181,440; 29% → $181,440 TO $258,482).
ARE EXPENSES DEDUCTIBLE?
What is not deductible in Quebec:
CHILDREN'S ACTIVITIES
FOOD
HOUSING
EVERYDAY EXPENSES
What can be taken into account:
IN THE FORM OF TAX CREDITS, NO DIRECT DEDUCTIONS:
CHILDCARE EXPENSES
MEDICAL EXPENSES
EDUCATION
DONATIONS
THIS REDUCES TAXES, BUT WITHIN A REGULATED WAY DIFFERENCES TO UNDERSTAND:
FRANCE:
TOTAL HOUSEHOLD INCOME
NUMEROUS DEDUCTIONS
COMPLEX CALCULATION
QUEBEC:
INDIVIDUAL INCOME
FEW DEDUCTIONS
SIMPLER SYSTEM
TARGETED CREDITS
Conclusion :
Understanding these differences is essential for planning effectively. And above all, never compare only gross salaries.
